Based on the photo that you've provided, it appears that your husband may very well need a crown.  Not having dental insurance should not be a huge barrier, because dental insurance usually doesn't pay more than 50% of the cost of crowns anyway and no more than $1,000 to $2,000 per year.  This means that if you get a crown on that tooth with insurance, it will likely cost you about $400-$500, but without insurance, it will cost you about $800-$1,000, depending on your region.  Many dental offices will give you a free consult, so I recommend looking for an office offering a free consult, then go there and get the crown.  Most will allow you to pay 50% or less down and then the other 50% or so, when you come back to get the permanent crown placed.  Good luck and I hope this helps. Unfortunately without an X-ray it is very difficult to know the depth of the cavity and it's proximity to the nerve.  The best thing to do is get your husband to go to a dentist and take an X-ray right away.  The danger of waiting is root canal and infection.  Tooth colored filling could range from $150 to $600 depending on depth, number of surfaces and quality.Best,Dr. Maddahi
