Should I Have my Other Breast Redone While I Have my Ruptured Implant Redone, to Match Better?

Question

I had my left breast implant rupture during a biopsy. Should I get my right breast redone, to match the "new" left breast? I am afraid of uneveness and different styles of implants.

Both implants can be changed if you are changing the style, volume, or both. However, if you are replacing the implant with the exact same implant, it is not necessary to replace both. Older implants may be replaced as well.

There is a key piece of information missing - how long ago were the implants put in? If the implants are fairly new, then simply replacing the rutured one with the same style/brand/size as the intact implant is appropriate. If the intact implant is several years old, it may make sense to replace both, so that you have a complete "set" of new implants. You should specifically discuss this with your surgeon. Many patients use this unfortunate event as an opportunity to change their implants - maybe they want saline changed to silicone, or maybe they want change of implant size.

Many patients prefer to change both implants to make them both brand new. That way, you can delay your chances of another surgery further. It is your choice. If the replaced implant brand and style are the same as the other they can be symmetric even if you only replace one.

If only a short time has passed since the rupture/deflation, it is fairly easy to obtain the same result you had prior to the deflation, without needing to operate on the opposite breast.
