Will my Areola Go Back to Being Round? (photo)

Question

I had breast augmentation 3 weeks ago. My steri strips just came off and I noticed one of my areolas isn't round anymore. My incision was through the bottom of my areolas and I think the problem here could've been that my PS cut too close into the areola on my left breast. I was thinking: "May be it's too early to worry about this." But I don't see how my areola could go back to round, where's the areola tissue going to come from to make it round again? It just doesn't make sense to me

You should wait it out for 3 to 4 months before assessing your results. Your areola may get better over this time.

The incision will be sutured and this will create some tehering and puckering of the tissue.

	As no areolar was removed in the procedure, as the scar matures and heals the shape and size will return to the pre operative dimensions.

	This may take weeks and even months so be patient

After a breast augmentation through the nipple-areola complex, it is not unusual for the shape of the areola to look a little distorted for a few months. It invariably stretches and rounds out with the pressure of the implant, returning to its natural shape over time. It may take 2-3 months, so I would just be patient and see where things are in another month or so. I hope this helps.

Unless the surgeon and something specifically to change the shape of the areola it should resume its normal round appearance after all swelling subsides.

The most likely reason for the flattening of the areola in your case is the tension the surgeon had to use in closing the wounds after placing the implants. It is definitely too early 3 weeks post-op to become concerned about this, as it may round out with time. I would recommend patience but also a discussion with your surgeon to get his/her thoughts as well. Good luck.

You are too early to tell but areolas are rarely perfectly round. Your pre-op photos should help document what you were prior to surgery. If a change did result, options are available to make it round again from scar revisions to tattooing.

Yeah, most likely over the next 3 months it will round out once the sutures all dissolve that are deeper beneath the skin. Not a guarantee though.

At three weeks postop you will still have swelling and thickening of tissues, and the shapes of things could be off just due to that. It is entirely likely that eventually as your tissues relax and scar tissue evens up, the areolar contour will improve - it doesn't have far to go right now. In the event that you still have some irregularity in the shape of your areolae after full healing at around 3 to 4 months, it would be very simple to revise all or part of the periareolar scar under local anesthesia.
