My Dentist has prescribed a crown but has scheduled the procedure in 5 months. Is it safe to wait this long given a crack has appeared in my tooth? This appears to be because of the limitations of his one-man shop.

In theory, composite does not bond to porcelain very strongly and the composite that has been added by your dentist may fall out but of you do not have senstivity and brush that area properly, that tiny gap does not create problem.
