I can't find my main surgeon anywhere. I am set to do my BBL in Sept in Nuevo Leon Mexico. I found one of the surgeons on the Consejo Mexicano de Cirugía Plástica. But not the main dr But he has his certification up on his website. Must they be American board Certified even if they are in Mexico or is the Consejo Mexicano de Cirugía Plástica the same ?
Answer: Only the Consejo Mexicano de Cirugia Plastica certifies plastic surgeons Dear Straightforward4041 thank you for your question. The CMCPER (Consejo Mexicano de Cirugía Plástica, Estética y Reconstructiva) is the only board approved by the Mexican government to certify that plastic surgeons are fit to do aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. You can go to their website and find every certified plastic surgeon in their directory. If your physician is not in that directory then he or she is not a trained plastic surgeon, and by law should not be performing any kind of surgery. The American Board of Plastic Surgery only certifies surgeons in the US, and they have no jurisdiction outside of that country.

Answer: American board certified vs Consejo Mexicano de Cirugía Plástica, are they the same? Hello, thank you for your question. When taking a decision if going to another country for medical care is worth it, you need to check first if the surgeon that will be doing your procedure has the adequate training and credentials, also that the hospital or clinic it is approved by the Mexican health department. You need to go with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in Mexico, who has experience, and can show you a lot of before and after examples of cases like yours, also you can go in the web to see if that surgeon has reviews about this particular procedure, so you have a better idea about his reputation.

Answer: Choosing a surgeon Dear Straightforward4041, most countries have a board of plastic surgeons. Finding the right Dr. is extremely challenging especially with the number of online platforms and resources available. There a lot of great Dr's available. Make sure he/she is a board-certified plastic surgeon. Definitely check to make sure your choice specializes in the procedure you want and spend the time to read through patient testimonials. There is a number of different sites where you can check for reviews (Realself, yelp, google, etc.).You can always pick up the phone and call around also, find an office you feel comfortable with and set up a few consultations. Answer: The American Board of plastic surgery Plastic surgery training outside the United States is insufficient to qualify to take the board certification by the American Board of plastic surgery. Plastic surgeons trained in Canada are I believe eligible to take the American Board of plastic surgery exam. Different countries have different criteria and different organizations giving certifications for medical practitioners. The criteria varies dramatically between different countries. United States is considered to have the most rigorous training that is the longest and the most thorough with the most challenging and difficult board certification examinations. I don’t recommend anybody travel for elective surgical procedures. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
