There are no restrictions that I am aware of of how many procedures anyone surgeon can schedule back to back or due in a single day. During residency, we sometimes worked 40 hours without sleep. Luckily residency training has gotten better with more attention to resident’s well-being. Some surgeons use assistance, and some surgeons do not. There are both advantages and disadvantages to using assistance during surgery. Large operations are sometimes better performed with more than one person working on the patient at the same time to minimize the length of the procedure. Often, first assist personnel have less training, the new board-certified plastic surgeons, but some plastic surgeons work in conjunction with other surgeons, having to board-certified plastic surgeons, working on the patient at the same time. It varies from individual to individual provider and how they set up their career. I suggest anybody interested in having cosmetic surgery have multiple in person consultations to get an accurate assessment and better understanding of treatment options as well as the begin vetting plastic surgeons to find the right provider. You can take this opportunity to ask each provider personally about questions you may have regarding the process. In the end, there are generally only two major variables that determine quality outcomes. The first is patient candidacy, and the second is choosing the right provider.Understanding your candidacy for a certain procedure is important, because people who are not good candidates don’t have the potential for getting great results. Likewise, potentially good candidates can end up with undesirable outcomes if they don’t choose the provider correctly. During each consultation, ask each provider to open up their portfolio and show you their entire collection of before, and after pictures of previous patients, who had similar body characteristics to your own. Being shown a handful of preselected sample pictures, representing the best results of the providers career is insufficient to get a clear understanding of what average results look like or how many of each procedure anyone’s surgeon has actually done. For reference an experience provider should have no difficulty showing you at least 50 sets of before, and after pictures of commonly performed procedures like a tummy tuck, abdominal liposuction or a BBL. When, in doubt, slow down and schedule more consultations. If possible, I recommend avoiding virtual consultation, and I generally do not recommend people travel long distances for elective surgical procedures, if at all possible. Best, Mats Hagstrom, MD
