4 days post op Breast Reduction, I haven't had bowel movements. Any suggestions?

I just had a breast reduction 4 days ago. However, I haven't had a bowel movement in almost a week...I know the medicine causes constipation. When should I be concerned/take more drastic measures (i.e. getting an enema?) My stomach is so huge and bloated! My shirts that were large on me 1st day post op now don't button around my stomach! Help!

General anesthesia can cause constipation- laxatives should help, as well as  fiber powder -- we usually let our patients know during their pre-op that constipation may occur.. But it is best to ask your operating surgeon.

This is a common side effect of
both anesthesia and narcotics. I suggest taking an over the counter laxative
and keeping your PS informed of the situation. Best regards.

In my practice I prescribe (actually  it can be purchased over the counter) Colace when patients get constipated with narcotic use. However, I would encourage you, and ALL patients with medical questions like this to speak to your doctor (operating surgeon)! I'm sure he/she would want to know if you are having any issues and he/she knows your history and condition better than anyone online.
