Hello! My name is Jessica, I am a physician assistant, and one of the providers at Aesthetic Skin in Winnetka and Chicago. This is a great question. Before your microneedling appointment, it's essential to prepare your skin to ensure the best results and minimize potential complications. Here’s a list of things you should avoid doing in the days and weeks leading up to your treatment: 1. Avoid Sun Exposure: Sunburned or tanned skin can be more sensitive and prone to irritation. Excessive sun exposure can also increase the risk of pigmentation changes post-treatment. Avoid tanning and prolonged sun exposure for at least 2 weeks before your appointment. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen daily. 2. Refrain from Using Retinoids: Retinoids (like retinol or tretinoin) can increase skin sensitivity and the risk of irritation. They also can thin the skin, making it more prone to damage. Stop using retinoids 3 to 5 days before your microneedling appointment. 3. Avoid Exfoliating Products: Products with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), or physical exfoliants can make your skin more sensitive and prone to irritation. Discontinue use of these products 3 to 5 days before your treatment. 4. Skip Blood Thinners: Medications or supplements that thin the blood (such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or vitamin E) can increase the risk of bruising and bleeding during the procedure. Avoid these at least 3 to 7 days before your appointment, but consult with your healthcare provider before stopping any medications. 5. Avoid Alcohol: Alcohol can thin the blood and increase the risk of bruising and swelling. Limit or avoid alcohol consumption for 24 to 48 hours before your treatment. 6. Don’t Get Other Skin Treatments: Other treatments, such as chemical peels or facials, can irritate your skin and may interfere with microneedling results. Avoid any other skin treatments for at least 1 to 2 weeks before your microneedling session. 7. Skip Heavy Makeup: Heavy or long-wearing makeup can irritate your skin, and it’s best to come to your appointment with clean, makeup-free skin. On the day of your appointment, avoid wearing makeup. 8. Avoid Intense Exercise: While not directly related to preparation, intense exercise can increase blood flow and sweat, potentially irritating the skin post-treatment. It’s generally recommended to avoid intense workouts for at least 24 hours before and after the treatment. Additionally, keep your skin well-hydrated leading up to the appointment. Drink plenty of water and use a gentle moisturizer. Preparing your skin properly can help enhance the effectiveness of microneedling and reduce the risk of complications. I hope this helps and best of luck!
