How many times a day and for how long should I put a cold compress over my eyes after rhinoplasty?

Hello. I had rhinoplasty done yesterday and my eyes are extremely puffy and dark. How many times a day and for how long should I put a cold compress on them? Also, I start school in 2 weeks and I'm hoping the dark circles go away but if they don't is it okay to wear makeup over them or will it affect my results

I instruct every patient to religiously apply cold compresses or crushed ice to the eyes for the first 24 hours, alternating 20 minutes on with 20 minutes off.   The majority of bruising will be gone in the first 7-10 days.  In addition, I recommend using arnica to assist in reducing bruising and swelling.

Ice will generally be the most effective in the first 24-48 hours after surgery to limit the initial swelling and bruising.  I like for my patients to apply ice (frozen peas or frozen vegetables works well) over the eyes and cheeks for 20 minutes every 2 hours while awake for the first night and the first day after surgery.  Most bruising will resolve in 7-10 days.

Usually I have my patients use cold compresses on and off for the first 24-48 hours. Best to always ask your surgeon.

I advise my patients to use ice packs on their eyes as much as possible for the first 48 hours.  Sleeping in an elevated position will also help with swelling and bruising.  Follow your surgeon's post operative instructions for a complete recovery.
