Spider and varicose veins run in my family, so I know I'm already at risk for them. I've had spider veins on my thighs since age 13, (am now 23) but they have progressively gotten worse and have spread to other areas of my legs. I recently had a round of sclerotherapy done, and am wondering if my birth control pill could possibly be causing more spider veins. I've been on a regular dose birth control pill for the last year, and they seem to have gotten worse. Is it worth changing my birth control method?

Answer: Spider veins and birth control pill Spider veins have multiple etilogies, and are mostly genetic. They can be worsened by hormones, especially those associated with pregnancy. If you are on a stable dose with your birth control pill, it is unlikely to cause a sudden worsening of your spider veins, however it could theoretically be possible. It is more likely the progression of your venous disease which is encoded in your DNA. Having a superficial venous ultrasound will let you know if you have any abnormal veins which could be "feeding" the spider veins and making them get worse.

Answer: Venous circulation Multiple pregnancies are one of the many factors that contribute to the presence of venous reflux. Using ultrasound to scan your legs, your physician will determine if venous reflux is present. Consider a visit to a vein specialist who you can trust for a full evaluation including the ultrasound scan. Your physician can help you make informed healthcare decisions to take care of your venous circulation now and for the future. All the best,
