Will sitting after 12 days post op for BBL ruin my results?

Thank you for the question.  Recovering from a Brazilian Butt Lift is a little more demanding that some other liposuction procedures. It is important to avoid sitting directly on your buttocks for at least 10 days after treatment. This is extremely important as it can affect blood circulation to the area and potentially destroy the transferred fat cells.

 Thank you for this very relevant question. I instruct my patients to avoid sitting for the first three weeks after the surgery. They will sit on a roll  that is placed underneath their thighs so that the buttocks is not touching the surface of the chair. This is also very good for your back.  Fat cells are very sensitive to various forces such as pressure.  Especially in the beginning of the three post operative weeks,fat cells can deteriorate if exposed to too much p
 
pressure. The longer you wait the higher the chance that the fat cells will survive. 12 days Is definitely too early  for sitting for a longer time.  If however you only sit for a short time you should not worry. Have a wonderful rest of the day and greetings from the beautiful island of Jamaica.

Dear juliediaz,I instruct my patients not to sit for 2 solid weeks. We provide them a specialized pillow that our patients can sit on during that time. I guess that there shouldn't be any major damage but without an examination I can't be sure.Daniel Barrett, MD, MHA, MS

Thank you for your question. Every surgeon will have his/her own preferences as to recovery for specific procedures. Most surgeons recommend to avoid sitting for two weeks after your surgery. At 12 days post surgery i would say you're safe to sit as the pressure caused by sitting  at this point is not sufficient to affect viability of the fat cells.

I recommend that my patients minimize sitting, even with a pillow, for the first two weeks.  If they must sit, every 30 minutes or an hour, they should get up and stand for a few seconds to take the pressure off.   This reduces the chance for fat necrosis. I usually recommend about 6 weeks before sitting without a pillow. After 6 weeks the fat has revascularized, and they will have a very good idea of their final results.  

In any fat transfer procedure, a percentage of the fat is lost. To minimize this, patients are asked to avoid sitting for 1-2 weeks post-op. Sitting for prolonged periods can put pressure on the newly transferred fat which could reduce blood supply to the area and thus fat survival.
If you're already 12 days post-op, you are through the most critical phase. Sitting at this point is unlikely to significantly impact your result. Try to shift your weight or change positions frequently. Alternatively, you could use a specialized pillow to off-load the treatment area.
