Is it safe to have a BBL surgery after I have had a stent placed in my iliac vein?

Question

I had a stent placed in my iliac vein in 2015 due to being diagnosed with May-Thurner Syndrome and having a blood clot. My clot was cleared immediately with surgery and I had a stent placed. I have had no issues and should have no issues with blood clots after my stent was placed. Is it safe to have a BBL? May-Thurner syndrome (MTS) is caused when the left iliac vein is compressed by the right iliac artery, which increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the left extremity.

it is hard to tell for sure without an examination. You will need to get a clearance from your doctor prior to surgery. If you are considering a surgery, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations.

If you are otherwise healthy with a BMI of 30 or below and can obtain clearance from the cardio-thoracic surgeon or cardiologist who performed your surgery and periodic follows ups, you should be able to have the surgery. The surgical team will take precautions such as compression stockings used during surgery.

Considering that your stent is now mature and is most likely at minimal risk for re-developing a blood clot you should be fine to have elective surgery.

Plastic surgeons may I ask for a clearance from a vascular surgeon or whoever was your treating physician at the time of stent placement despite being in 2015.

I just don’t know how each individual person would address this.

Perhaps your procedure was done by an interventional radiologist and not a vascular surgeon.

Regardless your situation should’ve been corrected by the stent placement and at least by my understanding you should no longer be at significant increased risk.

It’s still important to confirm if you’re a good candidate for the procedure from a plastic surgery perspective so I suggest having multiple in person consultations to determine that part. During your consultations you should share your medical history and see what each individual surgeon has to say.
