Stress can do many things to the human hair follicle although one must always keep in mind that usually it has no consequences. However, stress can cause increased daily hair shedding - a phenomenon called 'telogen effluvium.' Propecia (finasteride) does not affect this from of hair loss because telogen effluvium from stress is not hormonally mediated (DHT mediated) for most people. However, stress can accelerate androgenic alopecia if it is prolonged high intensity stress. In this situation, finasteride might help slow the androgenetic alopecia. For most people though, stress related hair loss is not affected by finasteride use, especially if short term.
Although stress can be a factor in hair loss, its contribution is often exaggerated. Genetics tend to play a stronger role. Propecia is a good medication to help prevent hair loss. As it is a prescription medication, I suggest an evaluation with a hair restoration physician to discuss the facts about Propecia so you can make an informed decision. Other modalities, such as minoxidil (Rogaine), laser therapy (LLLT) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can also be discussed and considered.Good luck on the MCAT's!
When you have genetic balding, stress can make it accelerate and the drug finasteride can slow it down
