There is no one treatment that will work for everyone. Aging skin can have many issues that may need multiple therapies to resolve. Lasers, chemical peels, microneedling, Botox and hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can all be combined depending on your needs. That said, photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a wonderful way to resolve hyperpigmentation, remove precancerous lesions and stimulate new collagen in aging skin. There are few side effects with PDT. A little swelling, peeling and redness may persist for up to a week. Please see a board-certified dermatologist to have your skin evaluated in person to find out which therapies will be best for you.
F you are addressing sun damage such as actinic keratosis than pdt is preferred. However expect one week of swelling and peeling. For milder damage other options include the Sciton halo laser or picosure photrejuvenation. PDT can be covered on insurance.cLaser will be self pay.
To answer your question on PDT, yes, it is great. Less downtime compared to Efudex and other creams, but there are other treatments, depending on your skin type and your goals. In this video I use the 1927 Fraxel laser. Other lasers that can help include fraction CO2, Picosure FOCUS, Q switch lasers, and Halo. A photo will help.Recovery from my method of high density 1927 Fraxel is around 5-7 days, depending on your immune system, and the amount of passes.
