Can you get red breast syndrome with a reduction? Most of what I’m seeing is just directly talking about it being due to the implant overlay. I believe I have red breast syndrome but I had a reduction.

Answer: Red Breast Syndrome Red breast syndrome is a phenomenon associated with acellular dermal matrix use in breast surgery, particularly postmastectomy breast reconstruction. Its clinical presentation has been described as a non-infectious, self-limited erythema of a postmastectomy breast reconstructed using acellular dermal matrix. Its incidence, risk factors, pathophysiology, clinical course, management, and long-term sequelae are poorly understood.Typically it would not be associated with breast reduction. There are however other causes of skin redness after breast reduction. Impossible to narrow it down without more details. Recommend you be evaluated by your surgeon.

Answer: Concern Hello and thank you for your excellent question. Red breast syndrome generally refers to a skin reaction to the placement of a cellular dermal matrix (e.g., alloderm) underneath the skin. We typically do not see it after breast augmentation with an implant alone, or in the setting of a breast reduction. If you are seeing it, it may be the consequence of an undrained fluid collection under the skin, cellulitis, or other process. I suggest you follow up with your surgeon directly.
