I had a vertical c section 5 yrs ago. Can I still get the gastric sleeve?

Absolutely. Most patients have had previous surgery. A vertical midline incion would not prevent you from having this much needed surgery.

Everything will depend on the positioning of the laparoscopic entry ports, if there is the possibility of finding granulation tissue adhesions or scar tissue that can be eliminated by laparoscopy. Once these adhesions are released (if present), the sleeve can be performed without any problem.

the important thing is that you discuss this with your bariatric surgeon to clarify doubts and questions before undergoing the surgical procedure.

You will be fine.  I do sleeves on such patients all the time.  Remember, you had pelvis surgery, when we do a sleeve, we are working above the belly buttom.  

It should not be an issue. You surgeon may encounter some adhesions from that operation, but they can be divided to make room for our camera/instruments.

Hello Nita. Yes it is totally possible and independent procedure. It's not even in the way of the surgeon so having one or several C sections does not interfere if you wish to have weight loss surgery down the road. I hope this helps. warm regards, Dr. Alvarez

This is in a different part of the abdomen, and even if there is internal scar tissue (or adhesions) it will be readily taken care of by a surgeon. There is minimal increased risk because of this.
