Is this reaction to surgical tape around incision normal? (Photo)

Question

I'm 18 days post BA surgery. My incisions have been about itchy, & when I took the surgical paper tape off this morning, I saw that one side is very red, including part of the incision. It is itchy & sore to touch - even water in the shower burned! Is this definitely a reaction to the surgical tape, or is it possible to be something else? I can't see my surgeon for 4 more days.

I would send a few pics to your PS office and see what they recommend.  I agree from the picture it looks like you were reacting to the adhevise in the tape

Hi. It is likely that this reaction is tape irritation - use a soothing or hydrocortisone cream to settle the reaction, and then discuss using another tape or massaging your scar to help the scarring settle as quickly as possible.

This looks like a rash related to an allergy to the tapes or an adhesive applied to the area.  Usually removal of the tapes is the treatment. Check with your surgeon about antibiotic ointment or hydrocortisone cream to the area.All the best.

I think that it more than likely is related to the tape as an irritation, but the most accurate way to determine the cause is to be seen in person to be evaluated.

Call your surgeon and send this photo to him or her but this looks innocent. I have seen much more significant tape reactions than this. But, again, let your surgeon at least see the photo. I often have my patients just text me a picture in situations like this. If your doctor thinks you need to be seen early he will let you know.

You may have an allergy to the surgical tape or the skin glue used.  Follow up with your Plastic Surgeon as soon as possible for an evaluation.
