Risks of silicone injections include ongoing pain, injuries such as scarring, tissue death, and permanent disfigurement. The FDA warns if the silicone migrates beyond the injection site, it could cause an embolism, stroke, infections, or even death. The serious complications may occur right away or years later.
Hi Momma,The long term effects of the presence of this product in the body have not been studied, so no one will be able to answer this with certainty. What I can tell you from experience, is that every person is unique in presentation. Some come to me with severe symptoms just weeks or months after injection. I see others who don't begin experiencing symptoms until 20+ years later. What I have seen to be true is that once the symptoms present, they only get worse with time. I wish you good health and the best of luck in your search for treatment, should you so choose. - Dr. Nik
Silicone biopolymers are being used throughout the world for facial and body volume augmentation. Results are longer-lasting that Juvederm or Restylane. Bellafill and Artefill are known to cause granulomas and permanent nodules with swelling. This is not the case for everyone. Silicone biopolymers can also cause similar chronic inflammatory conditions. In my practice, I specialize in the removal of Bellafill and Artefill injections, in addition to silicone biopolymers, from the face and body. Initially, treatments are non-surgical with corticosteroids and immune modulators. If unable to be corrected, we can also perform surgery in some cases. Silicone biopolymers can also be removed from the body if there are signs of migration or inflammation. All of these filler-types should be removed as early as possible. Lastly, our office is conducting ongoing studies of plasma-assisted corticosteroid application, which allows for diffusion of the treatment medication in superficial tissue without causing atrophy. Hello, thank you for your question regarding what happens if you never get buttock silicone removed which a previously been injected illegally into your buttocks. There are many patients who do not have any symptoms in regards to the silicone that was previously injected into their buttocks. These are the fortunate few. However, most patients over time will develop problems. Since the injected silicone is a foreign body and a potentially infectious source, your body makes scar tissue around each tiny ball of silicone. Since your body cannot dissolve the silicone, the scarring becomes chronic. The scarring can become excessive and lead to a very hard, dense butt. The chronic buttock scar tissue and then turn into a granuloma. The silicone stimulated buttock scar tissue can become very painful. The buttocks can become very painful when doing activities or when you are not doing anything and just laying in bed. The illegal silicone injection buttock scar tissue and then further surround nerves and lead to localized back and leg pain. In addition, the free silicone can move. The free silicone can migrate to the groin region and down the legs. I have had several patients who due to the excessive silicone associated scar tissue have problems with their electrolytes, specifically calcium. Also, I have had patients with excessive silicone buttock scar tissue develop kidney failure requiring kidney transplant. In addition, I have had several patients whose silicone butt scar tissue turns into granulomas, which then turned into cancer. I stress that these scenarios do not happen to every patient; however, I would urge you to have your buttock silicone removed as soon as possible before symptoms and progression of scar tissue develops. Thank you for your questions regarding what happens if you do not remove the silicone which previously been injected illegally into your buttocks. If you are considering silicone butt removal, please seek a specialist. Travel out of state if you must. Thank you for your question regarding the potential complications of not removing buttock silicone. Sincerely, Dr.Katzen. (certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery).
Hi Reliable6396! It’s very possible to surgically remove permanent lip fillers such as silicone or biopolymer, but the approach depends on the extent and type of material, how your body has reacted to it over time, and how much scar tissue has developed around it. The first step is usually a...
