Wearing a bra/sports bra. Why do some doctors prefer the camisole bra rather than a sports bra, or compression bra and others no

Dear FuNat,     I hope that you selected your surgeon after due diligence and that you checked his or her's before and after photo gallery and you liked the results. If that is the case, than follow the recommendation. In my practice, for the first month after surgery, my patients are braless in order to allow the implants to weigh down on the IMF (infra mammary fold ) and prevent it from migrating upward , creating ptotic appearance. My patients are wearing regular bra without a wire at bed time , so to avoid lateral displacement of the implants and possibly widening the cleavage area.         I hope this helps.                          All the best,                                      Dr Widder

Each surgeon has their own specific post operative instructions. It is best to discuss this with your plastic surgeon. 

I find that bras provide no benefit for the first month after surgery.  The weight of the implant allows it to settle into the right position.  Bras can only cause problems during this healing phase.

Most of the decision-making for post-op bra use is surgeon-specific and based on what they're accustomed to and more importantly, what they've done surgically.  There's no "right answer" for post-op bra instructions.  Ultimately, the surgeon knows whats best for you to do depending upon what works best in their hands.  Good luck! 

Each surgeon has his own preference for the post-op bra. Some do not even use them. Best to discuss with your surgeon if you have concerns.

I am sure there will be many opinions about this question, but in my practice patients are encouraged to wear camisoles instead of bras. I believe that the breast implant is ultimately supported by the internal ligaments of the breast. We maintain the ligament support as a "net" to support the weight of the implant. If the support is maintained then there is no need for "outside" support provided by a bra. This requires that we use an implant diameter that matches the dimensions of the breast established by the ligaments. We hope to achieve a full, natural appearance to the augmented breast with strong ligament support of the implant and no bra required!

it is important to follow the instructions and recommendations of your surgeon, as they know the specifics of what was done to successfully complete your surgery.  in our practice, we routinely use sports bras following surgery, and have found them to work very well for patient support, comfort, and results.  all of the pictures in our photo gallery of breast augmentation patients wore support bras initially after surgery.  good luck with your healing!
