What is Acell and why is it being used for hair growth? What is the impact of it?
Answer: Acell with PRP for hair growth Acell is being used in combination with PRP to help in hair growth. The theory is that the Acell will act as a matrix in holding the growth factors from the PRP in the area to maximize the local effect. Acell is falling out of favor because it was never intended for injection and has a higher risk of causing a reaction compared to autologous treatments like PRP. It is considered a Xenograft which means it is derived from an animal that is not human (pig bladder). I always like to go for the autologous treatments like PRP, and fat tissue harvested from the same patient. Allograft tissue such as donated human amniotic membrane and umbilical cord are other options that seem to work better and is probably safer.

Answer: Not a great product for hair A-Cell comes from the lining of pig bladders. Gross, right? But we have found that it works great in the realm of wound care. In that application, it is used topically and is really effective. However, injecting it is not a good idea. it can create a foreign body reaction and granuloma formation. That could actually cause hair loss! PRP alone works well, but finasteride is most important in men with hair loss. Make sure you are seeing a reputable hair surgeon. Good luck!

Answer: I prefer just using PRP and not A cell A Cell is from a pig bladder and is a topical agent and not designed for injection. I would stick with PRP injections alone. I have actually had the treatment myself with superb results (see my web site). I prefer to keep things simple and not add things that could cause problems. PRP is almost entirely free of side effects. You should plan 3 sessions, each spaced about a month apart. Studies show an increase in both hair density and the number of hairs. david berman md
