Can you get fillers if you have R.A., and you treat it with Humara?

Question

I've never had fillers or any other cosmetic procedures done. I am 40 yrs old. I have R.A., and take Humara for it. I have normal wound healing. I am allergic to metals, and latex, but only if in constant contact for a very long period of time, otherwise no other allergies. Only surgeries that I have had is gallbladder removal at 18, and an emergency C-section at 30. I hope that is enough information to help you answer my question. Thank you.

Hi @Raya Sunshine! You are able to get dermal fillers and botox while on a biologic like Humara. However, I do recommend that you go to an injector with a very sterile technique to minimize risk of infection. Best of luck to you!

Your medical condition and medicines are not a contraindication for dermal fillers. If you are considering injections, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations.

Thanks for your question. Yes, you can receive fillers while on Humara. Proper sterile techniques must be used otherwise it can be a greater risk of infection.  Taking the Humara, weakens your immune system and can make you more susceptible to infections.  Some doctors may even prescribe you antibiotics to prevent an infection.  It would be best to check with your Rheumatologist beforehand. There is no problem getting a filler treatment in someone taking a biologic such as Humira for Rheumatoid Arthritis or Psoriasis or Inflammatory Bowel Disease. The main issue is to have proper cleaning of the skin and good sterile technique as would be practiced in a physician's office so as to minimize any risk of infection.

As long as your Rheumatoid Arthritis is stable and medically managed you can proceed with filler treatment. I would, of course, discuss the treatment with your rheumatologist.

Even though you are taking Humara for Rheumatoid Arthritis, you can get both Botox and
fillers. The fact that you are taking Humara makes your immune system a bit
suppressed why it is very important that a sterile technique is used for your injections. A trusted injector will use a sterile technique, but it's still important that you provide the
injector with this information. Also, it’s a good idea
to tell your injector that you are allergic to
latex so he or she can note this in your chart should you wish to do
anything more time-involved in the future.
