How long is Botox (Allergan) in your body?

Question

I've had Botox injected in my forehead about two weeks ago. My husband and I are planning to get pregnant and my doctor says I should be fine, because the injected Botox will only be in your body upto 48 hours. It breaks down proteins and this is what causes a static muscle and effect remaining 4-12 months as your body restores this. The actual botox is already out of my body according to my doctor. I have read various awnsers here though about when botox leaves your system. What is the truth?

This is a very interesting question. I had recently a patient that had botox somewhere else and found out that she was pregnant. So I did so research and found out that there was a study published that look at the birth defect in patients with exposure to Botox before/during pregnancy and the result showed similar results that background group. Personally, I would recommend getting Botox during pregnancy but most importantly while lactating.

Thank you for your question ChrissyABM. I understand your concern. Botox
is a purified protein used to address wrinkles associated with facial
expression. There are no studies measuring whether Botox is in the body after a treatment. However the Botox protein binds to receptors in the nerves to prevent muscle contraction. As long as it is there the muscles will not contract. Since most people enjoy their results for 3-4 months it is thought that it is in the body for that time. I recommend that my patients discontinue such treatments 3-4 months before trying to get pregnant. Please consult with a doctor for specific recommendations. Good luck!
