Has Smart Lipo fallen out of favor since it first came out?

Smart Lipo was and always has been a gimmicky technology. It was a fad because people in general are fascinated with lasers and assume that they do magical things. However, it never improved results because it was never critical to getting good results. Liposuction experts use skill and expertise to get the results, so it was never really in favor for any reason other than for its use a marketing tool to attract people who are fascinated with lasers.

One way to assess the popularity of technology driven procedures is to assess the price of the equipment on the secondhand market.
The term smart Lipo is trademarked and owned by the laser company called Cynosure. cynosure made different generations of laser liposuction devices.
New these devices cost just under $100,000.
If you go on websites like eBay you can find them for sale for less than $1000.
Other Liposuction equipment like VAS ER has a similar retail cost but secondhand working equipment typically sells for about $25,000.
I don’t know any plastic surgeon who believes that laser assistance has any impact on Liposuction results other than for marketing purposes.
I know plenty of surgeons who’ve done lots of liposuction using lasers but all the ones I know recognize that it has no impact on the outcome.
To some degree this is also true for the newest generation of secondary skin tightening devices like jay plasma a.k.a. Renuvion and bodytite.
In the end there are only two variables that determine Liposuction results. They are the candidacy of the patient combine with the skillet experience of the surgeon.
Both of these variables have massive impact. The equipment they use does not.
Delivering consistent quality Liposuction results is more difficult than most people including plastic surgeons believe.
Patients interested in this procedure should spend a significant amount of time and effort finding the most talented and experienced surgeon by thoroughly vetting each provider at in person consultations.

SMART LIPO was introduced in 2006 and had the advantage of partially liquifying the fat with laser energy prior to its removal, resulting in less trauma and thus less pain and bruising for the patient. Since that time, other laser and ultrasound assisted liposuction instruments have been developed.
In general, the expertise of the surgeon by far outweighs the importance of the brand of instrument utilized in liposuction procedures.
