Mini PDO threads are typically smooth (non-barbed) and are designed to focus on collagen stimulation and skin quality, rather than significant lifting. In most cases, mini PDO threads are not barbed, because their diameter and length are intended for placement in more superficial layers of the skin to improve texture, firmness, and overall skin health. Barbed PDO threads, on the other hand, are considered “regular” or lifting threads. These threads have tiny barbs that mechanically anchor into the tissue, allowing them to reposition and lift sagging areas. Because of this, barbed threads are placed deeper and are used strategically when visible lifting is the primary goal. With mini PDO threads, you generally need more threads per area—often several placed in a mesh or cross-hatch pattern—to stimulate collagen evenly. While they do not lift in the same way barbed threads do, they can create a subtle tightening effect over time as new collagen forms. However, there are unique mini PDO threads for areas like the nose that can be utilized by highly trained Aesthetic providers to lift and augment the nose. These threads specifically are shorter and barbed for lifting and occasionally are used for different areas of the face with highly trained providers as well. At Citrus Aesthetics, we emphasize a multi-modality approach. Mini PDO threads are often combined with barbed threads, biostimulators, neuromodulators, or energy-based treatments to achieve balanced, natural results. This approach allows us to address skin quality, structure, and support simultaneously, rather than relying on a single treatment to do everything. The ideal number and type of threads truly depend on the area being treated, skin quality, facial anatomy, and your overall aesthetic goals, which is why an individualized treatment plan is essential. Aesthetic treatments should always be discussed with and performed by a trained, licensed, and medically certified aesthetic provider.
