45 - chin looks aged. Will chin filler help side dents? Are there better options? (Photos)

Hi - I am 45 year old female and my chin is starting to look very aged. I can't find anything online about how best to address it - would fillers work to help smooth out the lumps and puckering? Other better options? I find the side dents to be the most bothersome. Thank you in advance.

Hello and thank you for your question. Chin filler can definitely be an option to enhance the chin by smoothing out areas of volume loss. At our practice we ask our patients to provide photos of youth for their consultation. These are photos from 5-10 years prior when you felt your best. This is helpful in evaluating the natural facial structures versus age-related changes to the face. With aging, the chin undergoes several changes related to collagen loss, fat redistribution and alterations in bone structure leading to a less defined chin and jawline. Hope this helps! The orange peel like appearance is from the muscle 'Mentalis'. You can paralyze it with Botox and chin becomes smooth. Filler can help but can make the chin look larger. Sometimes the chin develops extra tissue and looks like a 'Witch's Chin'. In those cases a surgical chin reduction can help.

If the puckering is worsened by lower facial movements, then a few droplets of Botox can be helpful. If puckered at rest, then a robust HA volumizing filler can be used to help smooth them out. And, of course if there is both static and dynamic chin puckering, a combination of the aforementioned treatments can be used. You would be wise to consult with an experienced, board certified cosmetic dermatologist injection expert and best of luck.

Some dermal filler in the marionettes plus the actual apex of the chin could help this. I’d also consider placing some Botox in the Mentalis (chin) to prevent the upwards recession and creasing.
