When should I be able to walk my dog after breast augmentation?

This really depends on the size/weight of your dog. If you have a 5 pound chihuahua you will be able to start walking him sooner than you can resume walking a 70 pound lab! But with that said, you should wait at least 3 - 4 weeks to walk your 15 pound dog again to avoid any possible risks. Please speak with your surgeon about this in person so you can tell him how big your dog is and get a more personalized recommendation for how long you should wait to walk your dog after surgery. Healing varies from patient to patient. I recommend my patients avoid exercising for 3-4 weeks post breast augmentation. You can usually resume light daily activities after a day or two. Driving may normally be resumed after a week. Always follow your surgeon’s post-op instructions.

As I recommend to my patients, you should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous #activity for six weeks following your #BreastSurgery. You may, however, do normal activities at any time if they cause no pain or #discomfort. Let your body tell you what you can or cannot do. Aerobic exercise will raise your blood pressure, which could cause late bleeding and harm your result. Once you begin exercising again, start gently and let your body tell you what it can tolerate. Don’t rush!! It may require the full 6 weeks before you can do any upper body work-outs, yoga, etc.If you have concerns about your healing, or pain that you question to be unusual, it is important to call your plastic surgeon to discuss these further asked to be examined.

My patients walk their dogs by one week after their breast augmentations, and they have not negatively impacted their final results in any way. You will still be sore one week after your breast augmentation, but you'll be fine walking your small canine companion!One of my breast augmentation patients is a dog trainer, and she went back to work training dogs one week after her breast augmentation!  She did just fine.Thanks for sharing!

Hello,Thank you for your question. your Plastic Surgeon will likely want you to wait some time before walking a dog since this can result in pulling on the arms/ pectoral muscles. I recommend that my BA patients not lift anything over 10 lbs or do strenuous upper body exercise for 6 weeks post op. Your Plastic Surgeon will be able to clarify the specifics for you. Walking after surgery isa good idea, but when there may be pulling, tugging, and maneuvers with your arms and chest, it is best to err on the side of safety. Best of luck!

The unpredictable nature of dog walking is a concern.  Be careful.  I would prefer to have one wait a week for a dog of 15 lbs or 2 weeks.  If larger wait a month.

It's always best to check ask your surgeon about his or her protocol. I advise my patients to take it easy for a week; no activities, like sex, which might raise their blood pressure and increase the chance of bleeding. You could probably walk your dog at that point, too. I also tell my patient that if they have a child that needs to be transferred to high chair, car seat, or crib they can do so by the third day after surgery. The concerns I have about walking your dog are:  Will your dog pull on the leash or otherwise cause you to use your chest muscles during the walk?If your dog is distracted by another pet or something else will you be able to handle it without undue strain on your surgical site?If your dog is well behaved and your usual wlaks are uneventful in your neighborhood, than I think a week should be fine.
