If letting the tooth decay would eventually lead to the jaw bone decaying and changing shape... does the implant cause the jaw to grow or change in a diff way? It wont be an exact match for the original roots so it must cause some change, does it? Thank you
Answer: Good question!. When a tooth is lost for a number of different reasons, a dental implant can be a solution to replace this missing tooth, it can be done by grafting the area where the implant is going to go, ideally, a 3D image of the area should be taken, in order to determine quality and quantity of remaining bone, and therefore assess the need for bone graft material. This procedure nowadays is very straight forward, we encourage patients to be proactive instead of reactive, because we can actually save some of the bone around the infected/affected tooth by removing it before it can cause more damage to the bone, making the bone graft and implant placement more predictable and with better prognosis. Severe bone defects due to infections or fractures, can be grafted too, but they take more time and more grafting material, if the tooth is left without attention or to the point it falls out on its own, which is the worst situation.

Answer: Tooth extraction and shape changes As you are asking for a single tooth extraction, so it will not change any face shape. But it's my advice to restore that extracted tooth with an implant as soon as possible, otherwise, it will result in bone loss in that area, and in future you may require additional surgery to restore that bone for implant.

Answer: Implants avoid bone resorption Hello. The presence of alveolar bone which surrounds the teeth depends on physiological forces directly conducted by teeth or dental implants. So, when you lose a tooth and leave the space empty, this cause bone resorption due to lack of physiological occlusal forces. The position of dental implants may not be same as the originsl roots however this can be overcomed by implant supported prosthesis. So, your face contours, especially in terms of lip support and vertical height can be arranged.
