Is it possible that the Fractional CO2 laser has damaged my eyes? (Photo)

I typically don't treat the eyelid below the upper eyelid crease, because it doesn't accomplish very much and introduces risk.  Generally speaking however, if the eyelid is closed, the penetration of the fractionated CO2 laser is not sufficiently great to affect the cornea.  The rational for what was done must be discussed with your Physician.

It is the standard of care in my office that whenever we are performing eyelid laser whether fractional CO2 or standard CO2, we always use internal metal shields. I cannot speak for your surgeon as to why they did not use any shields for your procedure.

Fractional CO2 laser is a popular treatment to tighten and rejuvenate the skin of the face and eyelids.  In our practice we always use metal eye shields to protect the cornea when using any of the CO2 lasers. That said as long as your eyes were closed during the procedure it is highly unlikely that the laser damaged your eye. Most of the laser energy is absorbed within the skin. 

Some Specialist use eye shields externally some internally. If one was using a non ablative laser, such as an Nd Yag, or a Q Switch and its this close to your eyes, yes, internal shields are needed. Given the depth and location, external shields or caution in this wavelength. No further comment. Cheers, Dr Davin Lim.
