Thank you for your inquiry!  Drains that are typically placed after surgery are called JP (Jackson-Pratt) drains.  They are placed to drain excess fluid. There are several different types of drains surgeons use for post surgery.  Physician preference and specific type of surgery determine the type of drain used.  During consultation I would recommend asking your surgeon the type of drain they commonly use.  I hope this helps!
