So I have a screening test the third week of November. My health is great, and my weight and height matches the qualifications. They did ask if I had birth control, though I am in the process of abstaining from sex I still have the implant. Could this implant stop me from qualifying for the breast implant procedure? If I remove it sometime this week, will it affect anything on my screening on November 15th ?
Answer: Birth control implant Great question! Although every surgeon is different, a birth control implant would not stop me or most surgeons from performing the procedure, provided that the rest of your health is pristine and you have no other medical issues. The problem with birth control in general is that it can be a risk factor in the formation of blood clots. But your surgeon needs to do due diligence in factoring your risks for this issue along with your medical history and potential surgical procedure to see if it is safe to proceed.Best of luck and hope this information helps!- Dr. Roger Tsai @DrRogerTsai

Answer: Birth Control Every plastic surgeon has his/her own preop instructions. I recommend stopping birth control prior to surgery but it's not a requirement because the surgery does not take very long if it's a straightforward augmentation. I recommend discussing it with your plastic surgeon.

Answer: Implants and Implant Every surgeon has his or her own criteria on removal of your birth control implant. I recommend an in-office examination as well as a detailed discussion with a surgeon who you are comfortable with. Finally, make sure your surgeon is a Double-Board Certified Plastic Surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS), a member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).Best,Dr. DesaiBeverly Hills Institute for Aesthetic Plastic SurgeryHarvard Educated, Beverly Hills & Miami Beach TrainedDouble Board-Certified, Double Fellowship-Trained Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon

Answer: Does a birth control implant effect the chances to qualify for a breast implant screening process? Thanks for your inquiry and I understand your concern over your birth control implant. The reason some types of birth control are a concern is that they can increase your risk for blood clots. That said, your assessment of eligibility for surgery will be based on a variety of factors, including birth control. Your overall health, other medications you are taking, and your medical history will also be taken into account. My advice is to find a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon that will perform a full evaluation to ensure your surgery will be both safe and successful. Good luck with your upcoming breast augmentation. - Damon Thomas, FRACS

Answer: Breast implants and birth control implants Certain types of birth control products increases the risk of blood clots after major surgery. There are certain medications and activities that can be done to reduce your risk of forming blood clots after any surgery with general anesthesia. The purpose of a screening test is to determine all of these risk factors for surgery and to find out the best way to minimize your risk of complications. If your overall risk is too high, you may not be eligible for surgery. A birth control implant alone is not usually enough to stop an otherwise health patient from undergoing breast implant surgery however the decision is left up to the surgeon and surgery center's criteria. Hope this helps!Johnson C. Lee, MD Plastic Surgery@drjohnsonlee
