I am a skydiving student and will be having a tummy tuck in mid July. I will talk to my doctor about this but I won't see him until the day of surgery so I am wondering, how long do I have to wait after the tummy tuck to go skydiving again?? I don't want to risk tearing back open or a lot of pain. Thanks!!

Answer: Skydiving after tummy tuck best delayed for AT LEAST 2 months; 3 is better!
I tell all of my tummy tuck patients they cannot raise their blood pressure or pulse for two weeks after surgery, can begin light cardio and toning activities at 3 weeks, can do more vigorous non-abdominal exercises at 4 weeks, and can gradually add sit-ups and crunches no sooner than 6 weeks. After 6 weeks, any activity is OK--AS LONG AS IT IS WORKED-UP-TO GRADUALLY!
Skydiving is extremely intensive in its demands on your body, and being buffeted at terminal velocity, then having the sudden jerk on your body's tissues as you open your chute, and then having another (sometimes not so gentle) sudden jolt to you body as you land is testing the not-yet-completely-healed tummy tuck you paid good money for, and presumably want the best results from.
Assuming you start a vigorous training program at 6 weeks, have no soreness, and feel both completely comfortable and supple in your abdominal tissues (not really likely), 2 months would be the absolut MINIMUM for someone in perfect shape after perfect healing.
Why risk your good result or safety? Wait at least 3 months, and before you jump, train like your life depends on it--it might! Best wishes!

Answer: Skydiving after Tummy Tuck
While you can start resuming physical activities in 3 - 4 activities, you should wait until you have healed sufficiently before considering skydiving - generally 12 - 16 weeks. You should allow your surgeon to check your progress and clear you before you engage in more physical activities such as skydiving.
