Accutane is a go-to medication for patients with recalcitrant cystic acne. It can reduce pore size and also reduce sebum production in your skin, making it less oily; and in turn, dryer. Accutane can be used to control acne, but patients receiving the medication should be carefully monitored. In terms of skincare, always wear an appropriate sunscreen and reduce direct sun exposure. In my patients, I recommend a good ceramide moisturizer such as Elevase whenever they are on Accutane. This will keep the skin hydrated and reduce the oiliness of the skin that is associated with oil-based moisturizers. Best, Dr. Karamanoukian Realself100 Surgeon

Thanks for your question. Yes, definitely an IUD counts as a primary method of birth control, but you will also need to use a back up such as male latex condoms. Discuss your choices with your dermatologist and they will be able to get you started. I hope you have a wonderful outcome with your Accutane - it is truly an effective and life changing medication!
To satisfy the requirements of I pledge you must use two forms of contraception.. IUD can be one. Condom can be the second
We highly recommend at least two forms of family planning methods while on Accutane for women. Either IUD or OCP will work under the iPledge program.
Thank you for your question. Yes, an IUD is an appropriate form of primary birth control, but a secondary method still needs to be utilized. Further examples of birth control are available in the iPledge booklet that your provider should have given you. I highly recommend you consult with your dermatologist regarding further questions. Take care and good luck.
