Does a septoplasty include manipulation of bones/cartilage in the bridge of the nose?

Hi there. Since an accident involving a football that occurred some 18 months ago I have been left with a deviated septum (at least this is what 1 consultant has told me) - and difficulty breathing through my right nostril. I have been recommended a septoplasty but am not sure this is enough as the deviation seems to be in the bridge itself, with the bone fractured. Will a septoplasty include work internally to the bridge and improve my breathing on this basis? Thanks

Dear Bonfunkjc1The septoplasty is generally separate and independent of rhinoplasty and usually does not involve he nasal bridge (there are exceptions). If the nasal bridge is severely displaced though, a septoplasty alone may not be enough. That determination is made based on your physical exam with your surgeon. In post trauma cases, very often one can have a septoplasty without a rhinoplasty, but if you have a rhinoplasty, the septum needs to be addressed.

A rhinoplasty and a septoplasty are 2 completely separate operations, but both can be performed at the same time under one anesthesia. The rhinoplasty procedure involves shaving down the dorsal hump, straightening the nose, narrowing the tip and bridge line for cosmetic purposes. A rhinoplasty will not improve airflow through the nose. A septoplasty  is performed when there is blockage of cartilage and bone known as a deviated septum in the back of the nose. A septoplasty is performed for medical necessity to improve airflow through the nose, and will not change the shape of the nose. Hi bonfunkjc1. Thanks for your question. A septoplasty involves removing the deviated septal cartilage on the inside of your nose only. Any deviations in the nasal bridge or any nasal valve collapse can only be repaired by a septorhinoplasty. Good luck. Best, Dr H
