Revision rhinoplasty 1 year and a half after nasolabial fillers - is this dangerous and what are the risks?

Question

Is it really dangerous having a revision rhinoplasty a year and a half AFTER getting nasolabial fillers? So I had the fillers in february 2021 and the surgery date is end of november 2022. The surgery is suppose to also reduce my nostrils so the surgeon will cut around my nostrils. Thank you.

Hello @chocoleptic, and thank you for your question. The material with which nasolabial fillers are made is usually hyaluronic acid, which is a skin-compatible material that integrates with the skin. So when a rhinoplasty revision is going to be performed, what has been done at the filler level does not intervene with the type of revision that is going to be performed on the nose. In addition, the surgical technique used by the treating physician is very important, along with the fact that tissues adjacent to the nose are not touched. If the doctor were to touch them, the hyaluronic acid may be reabsorbed faster. Best wishes! Alan Gonzalez MD, FACS. Thank you for your question. Dermal fillers should be dissolved by 18 months, though your surgeon will be able to identify any residual filler prior to surgery and ensure no complications arise as a result. 
As for revision rhinoplasty, it’s essential to know that each subsequent nose surgery becomes more complex due to the loss of structural support and scar tissue. The importance of experience, expertise, and artistry cannot be overstated. I recommend scheduling an in-person consultation with an experienced, board-certified facial plastic surgeon with expertise in rhinoplasty techniques. They will be able to review your surgical and injectable history and answer any questions you may have prior to your revision.

Hi there! If it's been a year and a half, the filler is likely gone. There should be no reason the procedure cannot be performed on the nose unless some issue occurred initially with the filler (i.e. vascular compromise and nasal skin damage). Hope this helps!
