If there are no other contraindications such as irritation, allergies, dizzy spells, etc with the use of topical minoxidil, it is often safe to begin using it with weeks of your transplant. At 8 weeks, you should be okay using it. There are potential benefits that could include reducing the incidence of shock loss as well as promoting yield of grafted hairs.
I recommend to start to use Minoxidil after 10 days for my patients. Yes it will help your existing hair. Finasteride (Propecia) is extremely helpful also. If in doubt please discuss with your surgeon as this should have been on his/her aftercare.
