3 days post Botox and I've got extreme swelling of eye and brow area. (Photo)

Question

I had Botox on Saturday 1st time. Fine of the day and following day. On the Sunday I did have exposure to sun and slightly burn my forehead and a little on nose but still no swelling. I applied aloe vera gel to the burn areas and went to bed. Monday, I had slight swelling on the eyes an d between eyebrows. The eyes went down but the brow remained swollen. Today I have woken to complete swelling around eyes/brows. I look puffy. Tried cold compresses but nothing. Can someone please help!

There can be some swelling with injections, but this may be due to your sunburn. If it persists, I recommend following up with your Doctor. Venus legacy, icing and cold compresses may give improvement. Best, Dr. Emer

Botox has a long track record of blocking nerve to muscle transmission and thus resulting in smoother skin with fewer wrinkles due to less animation. Pure Botox is FDA approved and very safe. Swelling and  erythema always raise the question of micro contamination. It is not unreasonable to return to your Plastic Surgeon who treated you and inquire as to this possibility and treatment options that include conservative measures such as antihistamines and even possible steroid. Seeking medical help with these concerns is appropriate

Thank you for your question and photos. It’s not unusual for BOTOX® to produce some minor swelling for a few days to 1 week after injections. However, your swelling very well may be more related to the sun exposure you recently had than your BOTOX® injections. Continue to use cold compresses and keep the area well moisturized with aloe vera gel. If the swelling doesn’t subside in a few more days, follow up with your injector.

Hi Elle,This looks like an allergic reaction and/or a sunburn. I doubt very seriously this is a reaction to Botox. I would recommend cold compresses, oral anti-histamines and that you return to your board certified dermatologist and show them what is going on. Do not rub or scratch your eyes, even if they are itchy as that would make it worse. Good Luck, Dr. Downie

It is unlikely that the Botox had anything to do with this. It is possible that this was a reaction to the sun but also very likely an allergic reaction not better , see dermatologist

I agree with the doctors that responded to this question.  Not likely the botox because of the time interval between treatment and swelling.  More likely related to the sunburn/and or the topicals applied.  Perhaps a histamine response?  Infection always a consideration and you should see your doctor to evaluate this sooner than later.

It always puzzles me when a patient has problem after botox or filler and posts on RealSelf. Where is your doctor? Call them. Someone needs to examine you. There are a multitude of reasons one can get periocular swelling. You need your doctor not internet advice.

There are a lot of variables here but the most likely culprit from the timing and what you describe is the aloe vera cream which you should stop and apply cool compresses to the areas

Sunburns can cause considerable swelling that don't always show up right away.  Sometimes I have seen wrinkle blocking neuromodulators (e.g., Botox, Xeomin, Dysport) cause some mild swelling, but this is extremely rare.  I have 20 years of experience injecting these, and only seen a few patients swell usually over the cheek bone areas.  If your swelling doesn't resolve in a day or two then check with the injecting person again.  I have never seen an infection, but they can very rarely occur so it is important to have your skin clean prior to injections.  Makeup should be wiped off with alcohol pads.  You could try some cold compresses for the swelling and hydrocortisone ointment.  Best regards.

This looks like an allergic reaction to me, your doctor may be able to determine the cause. I recommend returning, or going to see any doctor in person since we cannot accurateley see what's going on without actually bieng there. Good luck
