I am 33 and I had a full back, upper and lower abdomen Liposuction, and a Brazilian butt lift about 1 month ago. I feel fat and want to work out. Can I start jogging now? When can I also resume pilates, yoga, and high impact aerobics?
Answer: Absolutely, get going with full activity, nothing to worry about! In general, I would conservatively wait two weeks to resume exercise after any surgical procedure including liposuction as a safety measure to minimize any risk of bleeding postoperatively. Adding fat transfer to the buttock (Brazilian butt lift) to the procedures would not lengthen this time of you being unable to exercise. I have found it very helpful (and motivating) for patients to get back into the gym at 2 weeks. I tell them they may not yet be "100 percent" but to listen to their bodies in terms of energy level, fatigue, etc. Most patients that undergo body contouring procedures really want to maximize the difference in their appearance and exercise is very important. At one month after the procedure, you can go full steam ahead with all of those activities. The two other things post liposuction that are very important in my opinion are adequate post compression garments and post lymphatic massages to the areas. Hope this helps!

Answer: Guidelines for Resuming Exercise After Liposuction and Brazilian Butt Lift Thank you for your question regarding when to resume exercising after undergoing liposuction and a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL). It's great to hear that you're eager to get back to your fitness routine, but it's important to approach this stage of your recovery with caution to ensure the best results from your surgery. At one month post-operation, your body is still in the early stages of healing, especially from a procedure as involved as a BBL combined with liposuction. Here’s a general timeline for returning to exercise, but remember, these are just guidelines, and your plastic surgeon will provide advice tailored to your specific recovery: Light Walking: This can typically be resumed within a few days after surgery to promote circulation and prevent blood clots. It's a good way to stay active without stressing your body too much. Jogging and Low-Impact Cardio: For more intense cardio like jogging, it's generally advisable to wait until at least 4-6 weeks post-op, and only after getting clearance from your surgeon. Since you are at the 1-month mark, check with your surgeon to see if your healing has progressed enough to start jogging. Pilates, Yoga, and Stretching Exercises: These can usually be resumed around 6-8 weeks post-op, provided they do not put excessive strain on the areas treated. Avoid any poses or movements that feel uncomfortable or put direct pressure on your buttocks or the liposuction sites. High-Impact Aerobics: High-impact activities should be avoided for at least 8-12 weeks. These activities can be very strenuous on the newly transferred fat cells in your buttocks and the healing tissues from liposuction. Strength Training: This should also be resumed cautiously and typically not before 8 weeks post-surgery. When you do restart strength training, begin with lighter weights and gradually increase the intensity based on your comfort and the advice of your surgeon. It's crucial to listen to your body during this time. If you experience pain, excessive swelling, or any other unusual symptoms when you attempt to resume activities, stop immediately and consult your surgeon. Additionally, ensure that you're wearing appropriate compression garments as recommended to support your recovery during any physical activity. Please consult with your plastic surgeon for personalized advice, as they understand the specifics of your surgery and how your recovery is progressing. Following their guidelines will help ensure that you maintain the results of your surgery while safely returning to your active lifestyle. Sincerely, J. Timothy Katzen, MD, FASMBS, FICS Plastic Surgeon

Answer: Exercising after Liposuction and BBL While I always encourage my patients to not spend all their time in bed following surgery (leisurely activity minimizes the risk of deep clots in your leg veins and helps with swelling), I would not recommend doing any rigorous physical activity until about 3-4 weeks after surgery. This can even be longer depending on the extent of surgery and how you're recovering. I would recommend waiting a couple more weeks for high impact activities. However, you should ask your surgeon for their advice.
