Airport travel. Will my drains be an issue?

I have to travel to Asia on business for two weeks and my drain is still in after 7 weeks. My surgeon says I can go but keep it clean and stay on antibiotics. Will TSA have any issue since it looks like a granade and I use a safety pin to attach it to my shirt? I posted another question about the whole 7 weeks issue.

You are certainly able to fly following reconstruction. We often perform reconstruction on patients from other parts of the country/world and they fly with drains.While it is TSA's prerogative to inspect you and your baggage to their satisfaction, you should have no issues from them when flying with surgical drains.Hope this helps.

I've had patients go through TSA with breast tissue expanders and drains, and they had no issues. I wrote them a doctor's note ahead of time as a precaution, but it wasn't necessary. My only worry would be that in case of an infection (which can sometimes happen even though you are on antibiotics) sometimes a difference of 12-24 hours delay in treatment can mean the difference between keeping and losing your expander or implant, so make sure you have a plan to seek medical treatment if anything resembling infection should occur.

Drainage tubes are usually made from silicone.   Fortunately, that means that metal detectors are not an issue.   Many people travel following surgery with drains.   To avoid any potential issues, would get a copy of your operative report and a note from your physician.   Carry these with you and you can show them to TSA if there are any questions.
