Having a breast reduction in 3 weeks. I Quit smoking cigarettes 3 weeks ago since the doctor said no nicotine. I have smoked marijuana through a bowl as well as a vape pen and read today that may be a problem. I’m already super nervous about the whole procedure, should I be worried about marijuana smoke as well as nicotine? Is vaping it ok instead?
Answer: Smoking and Breast reduction Thank you for your honesty in asking a great question. Patients that are having a breast reduction will have many incisions to heal which requires a healthy body with great circulation. Products with nicotine can have a significant effect on the body healing. Smoking of any product can cause irritation of the nose, mouth and throat which could make your recovery more difficult. Abstaining from all harmful products 3-6 weeks before surgery and 6 weeks after surgery to obtain better results.

Answer: Smoking and breast reduction Any smoke inhalation can be potentially harmful to healing in my opinion. Be sure to discuss your goals and concerns with your board certified plastic surgeon and consider the pros and the cons. Be certain your surgeon is properly certified. I've attached a link where you can start your search.

Answer: Smoking Congratulations on giving up smoking. Giving up 6 weeks before surgery is recommended. In terms of vaping etc it best to give up anything you inhale for 4-6 weeks prior to surgery and if you give these up now I doubt that your surgery will be affected.

Answer: Marijuana and reduction Although smoking tobacco is more well studied than smoking marijuana, I would still encourage you to stop weeks prior to surgery. Tobacco (in any form) is problematic as nicotine constricts blood vessels compromising blood supply to the skin and increasing risks of wound healing problems and infection. Note that many vape products do contain tobacco. While marijuana does not affect circulation in a similar manner, smoking does influence the respiratory system's ability to clear mucus. This could have an impact on a general anesthetic or predispose to post operative coughing, theoretically even pneumonia. Any drug use may also influence your tolerance of pain medications needed after surgery. Best to discuss your use with your surgeon. Best of luck with your reduction.
