I was diagnosed with a herniated disc last night and Im in fear this could potentially affect my long awaited "mommy makeover" in March 2015. I quickly signed up for physical therapy and plan on taking all necessary precautions to a safe yet speedy recovery prior to surgery. Can a herniated disc stop me from getting surgery?
Answer: Herniated disk and mommy makeover Thanks for your question. I am sorry to hear about your disk problem. I have personally experienced a disk issue with my neck, so I understand what you are about to go through with therapy and possible injections. As long as the problem is appropriately mangaged and you are functional and relatively pain free, then I think you will likley be able to proceed. I would share your concerns with the physician managing your disk to make sure they see no issues with surgery. Also, make sure you share all of your medical history with your surgeon. Stick with the physical therapy; it is not always fun, but pays off in the end. Good luck.

Answer: Five months should be adequate time to recover from herniated disc in anticipation of a mommy makeover. Obviously the decision to proceed will depend upon your clinical situation at the time of the operation. I think five months will be more than adequate.

Answer: Mommy Makeover I would discuss your herniated disc with your plastic surgeon. While many patients have back problems and successfully undergo the procedures you are considering each case is different. Herniated discs can be managed conservatively in many cases. But again you need to discuss this with your spine surgeon. The important thing is to make sure you will have a good recovery and have your back pain under control.

Answer: Herniated disc and mommy makeover Generally, a herniated disc that is asymptomatic or managed appropriately should not interfere with a surgery. Be sure to discuss this with your plastic surgeon and the physician treating you for the disc herniation prior to surgery.

Answer: Just diagnosed with a herniated disc in lower back. Will this majorly affect my mommy makeover surgery in 5 months? If your herniated disc is treated and you are pain free at the time of your mommy makeover, you should still be able to have the surgery. Let your plastic surgeon know about the disc problem and be certain to check first with the doctor who is treating you for your back. There may be precautionary measures they may advise to help prevent a flare up of your back pain. Best wishes, Dr. Lepore.
