Pregnant after a week of stopping using Accutane.

Question

My skin doctor prescribed me Accutane 10MG once a week. My last doses was January 16 10mg . My last period was January 10. Now I find out I am pregnant. How big the chane my baby get deformed ? Do I need to give up the baby?

Thank you for your question! Usually, isotretinoin and most of its by-products should be gone within 10 days after your last dose. However, I typically recommend that my patients wait at least one month after their last isotretinoin dose before trying to get pregnant. You are within the recommended one month window, however based on the dates you provided it sounds like you probably had very little if any of the isotretinoin still in your body when you would have conceived, especially since you were taking such a low dose. At this point, please consult with your OB GYN as soon as possible to help you decide what the next steps will be for you and the baby.I hope this answer is helpful! Best of luck.

10mg is a lower dosage and Accutane has a very short half-life. Meaning the majority of the medication is out of your system quickly. The FDA says females need to not get pregnant for at least 30 days after the last dose. So the best bet at this point is to discuss it with your OB - the dose you took, how long you took it, and how much cumulative dose you took.  "This answer has been solicited without seeing this patient and cannot be held as true medical advice, but only opinion.
