Question

2 days ago I received botox treatment in order to soften my jawline. 24 hours after the treatment I realized that I have bruising and a bulge (only when I clench and chew) on the right side of my face. My jaw was aching quite considerably the day after the treatment but this has now subsided. I am worried as the bulge has not reduced in size yet. I can also feel that the muscle in the right side of my face is swollen or bigger when I relax than the left side - which was not the case before.

It can take up to 2 weeks for final results with Botox. Icing, arnica and cold compresses may give improvement. I would wait a full 2 weeks before assessing whether you need a touch-up. Hope this helps.

Bruising following Botox injections into the masseter muscle is not uncommon.   The bulge might be from a small bruise or hematoma in the muscle itself.  This should resolve without problem.

Thank you for your question. From your description it sounds as if you might have a bruise in that area, which can happen any time the skin is broken with a needle. The bruise will go away and it may never be a purple bruise if it is a deep one, usually takes 10-14 days for a bruise or inflammation resolves. The onset of BOTOX is between 2-14 days with full effect being 14 days. Be patient and I am sure you will love your results. If the bulge or pain does not go away in 2 weeks contact your provider. Bruising can occur after Botox injection. Arterial or Venus puncture can result in a hematoma which can appear as a mass. Warm compress should help and you should follow up with your physician.

You have to realize that you are only two days after the treatment. It usually takes 3 to 5 days for botox start working, so you cannot possibly expect any of the results this soon. Be patient and I'm sure you will enjoy the results some 10 days from now. Good luck from New York City

Given the timing of onset it sounds as though you have some bruising, which of course will settle. If the injections are placed too superficially this can result in weakening of the outer part of the masseter muscle only, which can lead to bulging from activity in the deeper part of the muscle. It would be unusual, but not impossible, for the Botox to be working this quickly though.So expect the bruising to settle, and if there is any problem still around the 2-week mark I would return to your physician for advice.Best wishes.
