I have a recessed chin which I have been considering an implant for but recently I have noticed bulges below my lower lip becoming more prominent. Internet searches seem to imply this is muscke hypertrophy possibly connected to my recessed chin. Would an implant help resolve the appearance of these bulges? They are making me very self conscious.
Answer: Chin Implant for Lower Lip Muscle Hypertrophy Thank you for your question. Upon assessing your photos I see your chin does appear to have a weak structure. Weak chins often lead to an imbalanced appearance with facial symmetry, and de-emphasization of prominent facial points. As a board-certified facial plastic surgeon I find optimal, natural results are achieved by way of a silastic implant through a submental incision. This does not affect your hypertrophic segments and allows the individual to achieve a more projected lower facial balance. Additionally, diluted fillers such as Botox can be utilized to flatten the bulges you are unhappy with. It is important to find an experienced facial plastic surgeon who have years of experience in chin augmentations. They can fully assess your desires and outline the benefits expectations one can receive with said procedure. Good luck!

Answer: Will a chin implant help with lower lip muscle hypertrophy? Hi. IMHO you are a great candidate for a chin implant. I perform all of my chin implants through a buccal incision, that is....through the inside of the lower lip. I prefer this approach because all too often I have seen chin implants displaced downward when the incision has been made under the chin. There are many surgeons that are very successful with this method and as for me, it's a matter of personal preference. Although your look and profile will improve the hyper trophy will not be affected.I encourage you to look up the surgeon you eventually select and make sure they are certified by the American Board of Plastic surgery and have years of experience in performing chin implants. Furthermore, request to see before and after photos of previous patients by that doctor....not a clinic or surgery center. Do your homework......research and verify the doctor's credentials. Have they had problems with the Board of Medicine, disciplinary or otherwise. Any law suits? Good luck.I wish you the best on your journey. I hope that the info provided has been helpful. Should you require any further clarification, do not hesitate to contact us. I personally conduct all the consultations and formulate an individual operative plan based on physical findings. We are one of only a few in South Florida that employ a web based program called TouchMD. Through this program potential patients from as far away as California can upload their photos. I then review each and everyone and draw my recommendations on your actual picture. This info is made available to you with the use of a private password that only you will have. TouchMD is private and follows all applicable privacy laws (HIPPA). I answer all questions personally, not through patient coordinators or other marketing individuals. Good Luck Dr. PG

Answer: Will a chin implant help with lower lip muscle hypertrophy? Hi, I have performed many Chin Augmentations using chin implants for over 30 years. From the photos, your chin is weak. When the chin is weak, this creates an imbalance making the nose appear larger, the mid face top heavy and the lower face look short that de-emphasizes the lips and allows early formation of a double chin. Chin augmentation using a chin implant will add projection to the chin creating harmony and balance to the lower face. I have found that placement of a silastic chin implant, through a small curved incision under the chin (also allows excess skin removal) to be very safe, quick, highly effective and far less invasive than a sliding genioplasty. I perform chin implant surgery in 30 minutes or less, often using a local anesthetic alone. In my opinion, you are a good candidate for chin implant surgery. The bulges below the lower lip are hypertrophic segments of the orbicularis oris (mouth muscle) which are highlighted by the weak chin. These will not be affected by placement of a chin implant as described above. These segments of over-active muscle are best treated with repeated Botox/Xeomon injections at a dilute concentration. I have found this to be very effective at flattening these bulges. The initial treatment can be performed at the same time as the chin augmentation. Hope this helps.
