Typical medications which are known to interfere wtih platelet function include ASA, NSAIDs (ibuprofen, motrin, naproxyn, etc). While antibiotics are not one of the typical medications we think of which can affect platelet function, there are certain classes of these medications which may interfere with platelet function. The specific families of antibiotics which are more likely to cause this include those beta-lactams (penicillins) and cephalosporins. Nitrofurantoin and miconazole have also be shown to interfere with platelet aggregation in animal models. Other medications which can also interfere include nitrates, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors, quinidine, statins, narcotics, anti-depressants, anti-psychotics. Certain foods and spices may also interfere with platelets such as ginger, tumeric, garlic, ginko biloba. If you are on any medication or supplements which you are concerned about, please speak with with your doctor before making any changes and certainly never stop any prescribed medication without doing so. Likely more important than stopping medication or supplements is being sure about the quality, dose, and concentration of the PRP being used for any particular procedure.
