Will smaller implants reduce risk of capsular contracture reoccurring?

Question

I got sub pectoral silicone textured implants, 280cc, 7 years ago. Grade 4 capsular contracture in left, grade 2/3 in the right. Capsulectomy and implant exchange in few weeks. I am of athletic build and was an A cup. What can I do to reduce capsular contracture reuccuring, specifically, will smaller implants help to reduce risk?

I am sorry to hear about the complication you have experienced. Capsular contraction can be a very frustrating complication for both patients and surgeons. In my practice, I have found the most success treating these difficult problems utilizing techniques such as sub muscular pocket conversion (if relevant), capsulectomy, use of fresh implants, and the use of acellular dermal matrix. Acellular dermal matrix is a biologic implant that carries the ability to become integrated into native tissue. It is made by taking a full thickness section of skin from a donor source (his human, porcine, or bovine in origin).The use of small breast implants has not been shown to reduce encapsulation recurrence rates.

Capsular contraction or is one of the most challenging aspects of breast augmentation surgery. There is no guaranteed way to prevent a recurrence of this phenomenon. Implant size has not been definitively linked to capsular contracture. There are a number of different techniques to help reduce the risk that should be  discussed in person with your doctor. This is a very complicated topic beyond the scope of this forum.
