It can depend on the type of scarring and location. This is tough to answer without pictures. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a cosmetic dermatologist for a formal evaluation and treatment options. All acne scars require a combination approach for improvement. I recommend lasers, microneedling/prp, subcision and fillers. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer
Microneedling pens are more precise with the controlled channels they create, because they enter the skin perpendicularly. These "channels" are essential for resurfacing scars and collagen stimulation. Most microneedling devices are adjusted to deeper treatment depths which is more effective for treating acne scarring. For even more dramatic results we do recommend having the procedure done with PRP or some other type of growth factor serum. Dermarollers will most likely not give you the results you are looking for because they usually do not reach the appropriate depth in your skin and will require more treatments. They also have the potential to create small micro tears as the needle leaves the skin creating more trauma to the epidermis and possibly uneven healing.
We currently perform microneedling with the SkinPen. Compared to the Dermaroller, the SkinPen hurts less, bleeds less and has an easier recovery. Most patients prefer the SkinPen for these reasons. Overall, we have been very pleased with the ease of use and results from the SkinPen. Regards,Dr. Ort
The difference is the way the skin is penetrated and the number of penetrations. The Dermapen does many more penetrations with smaller needles and they are perpendicular to the surface. The dermaroller is fewer, larger holes and they are more traumatizing to the skin because they enter at an angle and exit at an angle. These facts make the Dermapen my preferred treatment over dermaroller.
I personally prefer Pen over Roller, however, as specialist we use energy based 3rd or 4th generation devices. Certainly using a skin needling device at home can help, however newer ways to treat acne scars, especially combined with PRP can give faster and better results. Generally, microneedling treatments, even at 2mm are very safe in the hands of an experienced practitioner. There are many factors that contribute to your risk of long-term scarring from an in-office, professional grade microneedling treatment. Risk factors include your skin color, your ethic...
The depth ranges from 1-3mm depending on the skin issues and facial region. For an average 46 y/o with no specific skin issues (scars etc), usually we start around 1-1.5mm around the eye and lip area, and 1.75-2mm for the rest of the face. At the second session these can be increased. Be well!
