I got a red tattoo done on my upper arm nearly three years ago. After reading more about the pigment in red ink breaking down in the sun and passing the potentially harmful particles into the bloodstream, I'm considering getting it removed. Is laser removal suitable? Or are there other safe and effective methods? I don't mind scarring if it's in the shape of the original tattoo. Or is it better to just leave it alone?

Answer: Tattoo laser removal for red ink The best treatment option is a tattoo removal laser using picosecond technology. In my opinion the best laser using picosecond technology is the PICOWAY laser. It was designed for patients of color. The energies are flexible with the spot size to enable complete removal of the red ink without scarring. Although effective. as with any tattoo laser removal procedure, it takes many treatments to effectively remove the red ink. The number of treatments depends upon the depth and quantity of the ink in the tattoo. If done by an experienced provider, multiple passess can be completed at each treatment using different energy levels and depths of treatment. The treatments should be done at 8-10 week intervals to give the treatment time to work. The picowaves break up the ink with acoustic energy, not heat, into smaller particles which the white cells in the body pick up and remove from the tattoo.
