Do I really need a compression bra after breast reduction?

Question

I had my breast reduction on the 16th. My doctor told me to wear a normal bra without underwire or pads and seemed really against compression bras when I asked about them, so I've been wearing a bra in the size 34C non-stop since the surgery. I'm not sure if I should buy a compression bra anyway, because in every post I read it was recommended, but it is kind of expensive so if I don't really need one I won't buy it. Thanks for any advice!

Plastic surgeons differ on post-op guidelines for the type bra and the length of time to wear it following breast surgery procedures.  Although my practice provides patients with a surgical bra, a sports bra is fine; I do not recommend wearing an underwire bra.  The bra worn should not place any tension or pressure on the incisions.  I recommend that my patients wear the bra for six weeks after breast reduction surgery.  The bra facilitates wound healing and helps to minimize swelling, pain, and the formation of a seroma, or hematoma.  Kenneth Hughes, MD, ABPS Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA

Thank you for sharing your question with our panel. 
I tell patients that I like for them to have a sports bra or soft compression bra after a reduction procedure. My other rule is no underwires for at least one month postop to make sure the crease incision is well-healed. 
I recommend you speak with your Plastic Surgeon and adhere to his or her postop guidelines.
