 It takes about 3 months to see your final results with Kybella because that’s how long your body needs to clear away the cellular debris after the fat cells are destroyed. And, you are correct, there is residual swelling associated with this process. I was one of the investigators working on the initial trials of Kybella and learned from experience to be conservative in treatment to avoid creating too much swelling. Most of my patients have minimal swelling and see their final results by about 12 weeks. Thank you for your question.  We typically will recommend that it is safe for a second injection of the Kybella at least 6 weeks after the first.  After this time the majority of the swelling has gone down in order to proceed with a second treatment.  That being said, you certainly can see continued improvement in the submental, or under the chin, region after this time.  I would say that anywhere from 4-6 months after your last treatment, usual have seen all swelling resolve.  Kybella is the only FDA approved injectable product for submental fullness.  It is made from deoxycholic acid, and works by dissolving the fat which sits between the skin and underlying muscle under the chin.Be sure to consult with a board certified injector has experience injecting Kybella.I hope that this helps!–David Gilpin

Thank you for your question about Kybella.  You may still continue to see improvements for several months after the final treatment, as the skin continues to tighten.  There are treatments available to tighten the skin after Kybella treatments if needed.  One option would be Exillis.  Exilis Elite is an advanced radio frequency (RF) technology that targets fat cells to reduce fat and tighten skin.  To be sure you receive the correct treatment for you, see two or more experienced, licensed and board-certified providers in your area for a complete evaluation to make sure you are a good candidate and that it is safe for you to have treatment.

I would not argue with the 6 month time frame.  After that it is not reasonable to expect more change.  The big problem with Kybella is that the effect of this service is oversold.  It is subtle and in no way a real alternative to neck liposuction.  It is offered as an alternative to surgery.  Unfortunately it can be a very uncomfortable procedure with profound swelling that is frankly worse than surgery.  Compounding this is the relative high price of the product.  For that reasons, it is difficult to recommend Kybella as a true alternative to lower face/neck liposuction.

I would say that you would be able to see the final results after the last Kybella treatment session about 2 months later.  

It can take 6-8 weeks to start to see results with Kybella. The swelling and fat dissolves gradually. To improve Kybella results, I recommend a combination approach with thermage, ultherapy, exilis. VASER liposuction in combination with ThermiRF is an alternative for contouring the chin, if you're a candidate. Deoxycholic acid, the active ingredient in Kybella, actually dissolves the cell walls of fat cells (only) immediately upon injection. This is the first stage of the response to treatment. The second stage is the inflammatory stage. Macrophages are called to the affected fat and engulf and digest the cellular debris, carrying it away via lymphatic channels, which empty into the gastrointestinal system and eliminated. This phase typically lasts for about 4 weeks, after which you will be able to see the amount of fat that is going to be illuminated permanently. The final phase is the remodeling of the connective tissues, which takes place very slowly over a period of up to one year. During this stage, many patients notice subtle tightening of the skin. However, there is no reason for you to wait for this phase to be complete before having a second treatment if you still have fat in the submental area that you would like to remove. All the best, Dr. Clark 

The inflammatory response after Kybella injections may last an average of 8 weeks but it may vary greatly from patient to patient. Occasionally inflammatory granulomas (localized collection of inflammatory cells) may form after the injections and may take much longer to completely resolve.

Kybella removes the fat permanently.  The fat is dissolved and absorbed. The skin will tighten as well.  The results are seen up to 2months after last treatment and there can still be some Improvement for a month beyond the time period.

Kybella's effects may continue beyond months due to the continued retraction of the overlying skin and tissues.  Kybella is permanent and when injected the tissue  loss, fat loss, will necessitate a re-countouring of the skin.  Kybella is a non surgical option for patients who have a desire to improve the contour of their face.
