So recently I saw that my left front tooth has been chipped and I think it was from a candy I ate "jolly rancher" I told my dentist but they did nothing and kept it how it was. I know it's small but I'm worried in the future it could chip more and more. If I do need a filling or bonding I would love your info on them so I know how it works. It has been hurting but I'm worried about it please help me.
Answer: Filling/bonding clarification Bonding is a type of dental filling material. It is know as the "tooth colored" filling material. The method used to put the filling in/on the tooth is a bonding type method, vs a packing method used for amalgam, or silver, restorations. Unfortunately when the front teeth chip like yours did, the bonding/filling material does not always last. I can tell from the tiny photo you uploaded that you are a grinder. Grinders/clenchers tend to chip and break teeth more often. If the chip is tiny, it can be polished and smoothed. However, a larger chip would require a restoration--either a small filling or a veneer (I tend to recommend the veneer for many reasons). It would also be in your best interest to invest in a nightguard to protect your teeth.

Answer: Chipped front tooth In this situation "bonding" and "filling" are the same procedure. If the appearance bothers you I would definitely look into bonding to straiten the edge back to its original length. Most likely the damage from the candy is done and won't chip away a hole lot more if at all. From a structural standpoint you don't have to do anything to restore it. However, if you want something done I would stay away from smoothing the edge down as this will shorten the edge further and do a simple and painless bonded filling.

Answer: Chipped Tooth If a chip is small it can sometimes be simply smoothed off and will not likely chip. If you have questions about your treatment it may be helpful to have a conversation with your dentist. Things are probably going to be fine. Watch out for those Jolly Ranchers. Good luck!
